Paste up exhibition, "Beyond the studio"

Coming to wall near you...90 portraits, 25 reams of paper, 18 documentary photographers and 5 buckets of glue. MAPgroup are proud to launch Beyond the Studio, an innovative exhibition that will transform the streets of Castlemaine using large-scale paste up portraits that provide a snapshot into the amazing diversity of the artists of this community. The project is part of Open Studios, a component of the Castlemaine State Festival.

Exhibition dates: 22 - 31 March

Locations: Mechanics Lane, Bendigo Bank, Frederick Street including the Town Hall, The Mill and Lot 19

Launch event: Sunday 24 March, 2 – 5pm, Lot 19, 19 Langslow Street, Castlemaine, Victoria

Commission, Nicole Marie

In 2018, the National Wool Museum in Geelong commissioned award winning MAPgroup photographer Nicole Marie to travel across Victoria to take a series of portraits of female farmers.

Titled Women in Wool, these photos will be unveiled on Friday 8 March from 12.30 - 1.30pm to celebrate International Women's Day and will then be put permanently on show. Bookings: http://nationalwoolmuseumgeelong.eventbrite.com

Exhibition, Mike Reed

Eyes on the market is a new exhibition at Brunswick Street Gallery by Image Chasers, which includes MAPgroup member, Mike Reed. The group have documented the Queen Victoria Market, a precious pocket in the heart of Melbourne – the only surviving 19th century market in the CBD and the largest open air market in the southern hemisphere.

Finalist, Nicole Marie

Congratulations to MAPgroup photographer Nicole Marie for being a finalist in the Documentary category of the Australian Photography Awards.

This portrait is part of a series Nicole is currently working on highlighting the underrepresented roles and contributions of women to the modern wool industry in Australia. The portraits are of female shearers, wool handlers, wool classers, breeders and shearer’s cooks, past and present. This is Leearna Cook, a shearer from Baddaginnie, Victoria.

New member, Cathy Ronalds

MAPgroup is pleased to welcome new member, Cathy Ronalds. Cathy is a documentary and portrait photographer based in the Dandenong Ranges, Victoria. She is motivated to produce portrait-based storytelling images that convey a sense of relationship and intimacy with her subjects. Currently, Cathy is engaged in a long-term portrait series about women. Weddings, families and commercial portrait work form the bulk of her client work. In particular, Cathy enjoys working on special projects with creative clients. She also contributes stock work to Offset and sells art prints through Superfine Prints. Cathy was recently awarded: Top 20, Documentary/Photojournalism category, Australia’s Top Emerging Photographer Awards 2018 run by Capture Magazine; Finalist, Portrait category, Australian Photography Awards 2017; Highly Commended, Australian Pro Photographer of the Year 2018; and an Honourable Mention in the International Documentary Family Awards 2017. ACF partnership

MAPgroup is excited to announce a new image partnership with the Australian Conservation Foundation which will see MAPgroup bringing nature to life on the pages of the ACF's publications.
To start with, the ACF recently featured the work of MAPgroup photographers in their magazine Habitat.

Workshop, Helga Leunig

MAPgroup photographer Helga Leunig will be running a workshop called Finding the beauty in the everyday through photography with Penelope Hunt on Sunday 28 October. This workshop is designed to help participants discover their own visual language by learning to open and trust their unique intuitive vision.

The workshop will be held in St Heliers Street Gallery, located in the historic
and vibrant Abbotsford Convent, where Helga and Penelope are artists
in residence, and will coincide with their current exhibition.

VMC Film Festival, Jenny Hodge

Exhibition, Helga Leunig

Exhibition, Tobias Titz

The upcoming exhibition Polaroids 1998 – 2018 by Tobias Titz marks the 20th anniversary of his award winning, collaborative Polaroid Project. Tobias' project has both an aesthetic and an ethical dimension, each enabled by the special properties of Polaroid technology. The exhibition, which will be displayed at The Fox Darkroom and Gallery in Kensington, Victoria, shows images from the beginning of the project in Germany to new influences in Australia.
In addition, Tobias will hold a workshop which will give participants an insight into his unique photographic process.
