Code of Ethics
As photographers we are in a position to represent and manipulate reality in a certain way. This document provides the basis for professional accountability; and to potentially protect us from litigation.
MAP Group members:
Will always present pictures that aim to provide an accurate representation of the scene before the camera and to not distort its reality.
Will only alter images to an extent that was available to the average darkroom worker before the advent of digital imaging. Changing contrast, colour balance, dust spotting, B&W toning and cropping elements are all acceptable provided that they do not distort the essential truth and accuracy of the scene before the photographer.
Will not add, move or remove an element such as a person or clouds from their images.
Will always present sound that is true, aiming to provide an accurate representation of the scene before the recorder.
Are at all times expected to act in an ethical manner both in gathering their images and presenting them to the public.
Will respect personal privacy and private grief in gathering their images.
Will contribute their time on a voluntary basis.
We can all look at a photograph and take away different meanings.
Our response to an image is coloured by our experiences and prejudices, as is the way we decide to photograph a scene. It is the very diversity of approach to an image that makes photography such a powerful medium.
We know that many factors, such as our choice of camera, lens, lighting, timing, perspective and approach to our subjects can alter the impression an image gives.
While acknowledging the uniqueness of each photographer’s approach, we should always endeavour to provide an image that is true to the scene in front of us.
