MAPgroup photographer Annette Ruzicka’s image, below, was recently published in Good Weekend magazine. As Annette explains:
"Back in 2019 I spent some time in Derby, WA and this was the view from my window. Depending on the hour; the colours, the people, the animals could all change and drastically so. It was enough for me to jump out of bed at 6am (no alarm needed!) and see what was happening."
Here's the text from the piece...
"Derby was once bigger than Broome," says the photographer. "It was a crucial stop before you leave the bitumen into west Kimberley and beyond." The town is surrounded by salty mudflats that change colour through the day as kites and ravens circle overhead. "Every other morning some locals would appear and set up breakfast under one lone tree facing the flats," she recalls. "Underneath was a comfy armchair and they would watch the morning go by until it became too hot." Ruzicka realised the scene was an insight into life before European settlement in Derby just 140 years ago. "Sans the armchair of course."
